607 Arabesque
sport coupe
Designed by David Carl Dewitt
In
approaching the brief to design the car of my dreams I have chosen a Sport
Coupe: a
car, which embodies the excitement and passion of the driving experience and is
visually
stimulating as a living sculpture. I also wanted to introduce a more decorative
and sensual
element to the design. My
feeling is that a Peugeot would be the perfect vehicle for such
expression with its inherent feline characteristics being an ideal foundation.
Drawing inspiration from the Baroque and Rococo periods the 607 Arabesque whose
name is derived from a style of ornamentation used during the Rococo, is an
interplay of
curves and counter curves both in an architectural and graphic sense. The soft
fluid curves
that create the main architecture are intended to reflect a feminine quality
that is balanced
by a separation of the body into two components. This gives the vehicle motion,
creating a
sense of drama and accentuates the sculptural nature of the design, allowing a
subtle
metamorphosis to take place.
When designing the detail, it was important to maintain the form language
established by
the body. The lights are jeweled ornaments composed of a single form reflective
of the main
architecture, supporting the other components within. The shell forms and
asymmetrical theme
explored in the wheel are prominent themes of the Rococo period and add a
certain eccentricity
to the design, yet maintain the dynamism of the whole vehicle. Whilst the
arabesque detail provides
a calming influence, maintaining a sense of harmony and balance.
Overall, the 607 Arabesque is a vehicle that combines a contemporary sense of
proportional development
and aesthetic values of Peugeot Design with the flamboyant decorative styles of
the 18th century
as an influence.
